Agents of Impact Brief: Catalyzing Climate Capital, Building Black Wealth, Digital Infrastructure, and Fair-Chance Hiring Index
Family offices are stepping up to catalyze climate capital, with the potential to play a critical role in driving investments towards net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. According to BloombergNEF, up to $200 trillion in investment is needed to achieve this goal, and family offices managing $6 trillion in wealth globally are well-positioned to contribute. Builders Vision, the grant and catalytic investment arm of Walmart heir Lukas Walton, is among the family offices leading the charge in deploying capital into climate and impact investments.
Builders Vision invests across various sectors, including oceans, energy, food, and agriculture, to support the climate transition. The group’s assets include over $2 billion in its investment arm S2G Ventures, $2 billion in philanthropic capital, and billions more in its asset management firm, Builders Asset Management. By providing different types of capital to support nonprofits, venture startups, companies, and funds in public and private markets, family offices like Builders Vision can fund climate solutions in innovative and flexible ways.
Other family offices making an impact in climate and sustainability investments include Omidyar Network, Ceniarth, Spring Point Partners, RS Group, Vala Capital, Tripple, and PRC. The Creo Syndicate of family offices has deployed over $5 billion for climate and sustainability investments, while organizations like The ImPact and Toniic are also driving impact investing initiatives.
In addition to supporting startups and funds in the climate space, family offices like Builders Vision are actively engaging in coalitions and initiatives like Climate Action 100+ and Food Emissions 50 to leverage their influence as shareholders in large public companies. By anchoring early-stage companies and funds, providing R&D grants, and participating in coalitions, family offices are uniquely positioned to drive the climate transition forward.
