United Hardware and Do it Best Announce Merger, Reshaping Home Improvement Industry Landscape

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — In a move that will reshape the home improvement industry landscape, United Hardware and Do it Best have announced an approved merger. Shareholders of United Hardware overwhelmingly voted in favor of the merger on April 5, marking a significant milestone for both companies.

The strategic decision reflects a shared commitment to exceptional service, quality products, and a comprehensive range of programs to empower independent home improvement business owners. The merger is expected to enhance efficiency, add buying power, and drive store growth for previous United Hardware dealers and Do it Best members alike.

Do it Best President and CEO Dan Starr expressed his excitement about the partnership, stating, “This partnership represents our deep-seated belief in the co-op model and our dedication to drive member growth in an increasingly competitive market.” United Hardware President and CEO Chad Ruth echoed Starr’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of supporting independent home improvement retailers.

Both companies have rich histories dating back to 1945. United Hardware was founded by businessman E.J. “Gene” Koblas, who formed a coalition of furniture stores under the United Furniture Distributing Company banner before focusing on the hardware sector. Today, United Hardware earns annual sales of nearly $200 million.

On the other hand, Do it Best was founded by Arnold Gerberding in 1945 as Hardware Wholesalers, Inc. (HWI), pioneering the cooperative model in Fort Wayne. Through collective purchasing, HWI members benefited from better volume pricing, leading to the formation of Do it Best in 1998. The company now boasts annual sales approaching $5 billion.

The merger is expected to positively impact local markets, including Milbank, SD where the United Hardware warehouse is located, and Fort Wayne, IN where Do it Best is headquartered. Local communities can anticipate increased opportunities for investment and growth as a result of the merger.

Both United Hardware and Do it Best leadership teams are dedicated to ensuring a seamless transition for customers without disruption to their service. All United Hardware store locations will maintain their independent brand identities, allowing them to retain their autonomy and individuality within the co-operative framework.

With a shared vision and a commitment to supporting independent home improvement retailers, the merger between United Hardware and Do it Best is poised to bring about positive changes in the industry.
